You might recognize these two from a previous blog post, hehe! It’s Vicky and Joe and their brand new baby boy, Bertie!! Before lockdown, I visited Vicky and Joe’s home to take photos of them with Bertie. I love natural newborn photography- no need for backdrops or lights or props. Just mum and dad, in their home with their newborn. All the cuddles and kisses and adoring looks. It’s SO special to document these precious early moments!
A lot of couples ask me what to wear for their photo shoots and newborn sessions so I’ve created a What to Wear Guide that I send to everyone who books a Lifestyle, Branding, or Adventure Session with me. I also help couples pick the best room in their house for their photos. This means you only have to clean one room- don’t worry, I know how busy you are! No need to clean the entire house. ;)
Pick the room in your house with the most natural light and neutral colors on the walls, floor, furnishings, etc. If this happens to be your bedroom and/ or your nursery then that’s perfect! We don’t need a ton of space, just whatever room has the biggest windows and calm, light colors. Vicky and Joe’s bedroom did the trick! I LOVE their big windows, high ceilings, and light blue and white walls.
Because we were having cold weather, I suggested Vicky and Joe dress cozy and wear complementary (not matching) colors. It usually works well for mum and dad to be wearing solid blocks of color and for baby to be wearing patterns. It also helps if baby wears a light color that contrasts mum and dad. This helps them stand out in the photographs and not fade into the background!
Vicky and Joe nailed their outfits and even managed to compliment the artwork and soft furnishings in their room! Less really is best for natural newborn photography and their clothing and room choices really created the perfect scene for their newborn session. Next, turn on some calming music and we’re all set to go!
If you’re thinking about newborn photos in your home, I would love to hear from you! Once the world is up and running again, I’d love to book in a date. Meanwhile, I am offering socially distanced photo shoots outdoors which would be well suited to toddlers and young children and their families. Please do get in touch if you’d like to find out more!
