This month I am super excited to collaborate with a team of amazing wedding suppliers and give you the best tips for planning your wedding. Seeing as many couples are now having to re-think their wedding days, some even opting for an intimate wedding with fewer guests or a wedding in their own back garden, Jeni from Vanilla Rose Weddings wants to share her fountain of knowledge and wedding planning experience to help you in planning an at-home wedding. Keep reading and get ready to bookmark this page! Jeni is incredibly talented and knows her stuff. This is GOLD!
Hi! I’m Jeni, Lead Planner at Vanilla Rose Weddings. Based in Oxfordshire and working throughout the UK, I help couples from all over the world cut through the noise to create a joyful and refined wedding celebration of everything they are together.
My approach is all about making your wedding planning feel like a retreat from the busy-ness of work. I want it to be life-exciting, uplifting, and full of a hundred special moments for you. Busy, style-led couples come to me dreaming of a beautiful English wedding that brings the outdoors in and is more about joy and less about stress.
I work with couples right from the beginning of their journey to plan a wedding that feels wholeheartedly about them; celebrating their relationship, personalities, and truly encapsulates everything they love about each other.
Over the years I’ve planned many weddings in client’s homes. They’re fast becoming much more popular as couples dream of injecting more of their personalities and a truly personal touch into their celebrations.
Hosting a wedding at home can be the perfect solution to any issues you might have had in finding that perfect venue that ticks all of your wish list boxes. There are definitely more logistics and practicalities to consider before making that final decision. I’d love to share some of my tips with you to equip you with the best knowledge to set you on your way with planning your at-home wedding.
Consider the size and scope of your wedding and how many guests you might like to invite. If you’re planning to have a marquee in your garden or on your land, consider where the best site would be for a marquee build. Think about access for marquee vans and suppliers, water, and electricity supply. Also, whether it’s flat enough or if it requires a little more technical ability from your marquee team.
Check with your electrician if your current household supply would be able to support the volumes required by your caterer, production team, and band. If it’s not quite enough, or you’re not confident that you have plenty always bring in an additional generator. It’s better to be safe than sorry. The last thing you want is the power cutting out when the party is in full swing!
Ensure you have enough car parking space for your guests. There’s nothing more frustrating than arriving at a wedding and not being able to find anywhere to park–not to mention an issue with neighbours if your guests begin parking throughout the local roads too! My advice would be to hire a Security team to ensure the marquee is safe throughout the lead-up to your wedding date. They can also assist with parking for your guests on the day of your wedding.
On the subject of neighbours, it’s important not to upset anyone nearby! Make sure you consult and advise your neighbours in advance. It’s wise to keep them informed of your plans ahead of the day so they’re aware and prepared for the potential disruption.
For me, the benefits of hosting a wedding at home far outweigh the additional considerations with logistics! You have the freedom to select a tent style of your choice, rather than being confined to particular venues, style, or accredited suppliers. You likely won’t have to abide by nearly as many rules and restrictions as you may have to if you were hosting your event at a venue. It’s your property, and you can plan and style the day as you please!
You could even incorporate beautiful elements of your garden inside the marquee, such as a fountain or a feature wall. A few years ago we incorporated a client’s gorgeous wisteria into the entrance of the marquee, which was a stunning feature as guests arrived at the Reception. The build of the marquee can begin much earlier if needed than you would at a venue who may give you a shorter timeframe for marquee access. This means you’ll have plenty of time for decorating and styling your marquee, without rushing!
