I’m very excited to introduce to you James from That Event Company! If you’re getting married and looking to transform your wedding venue, James is your guy. Not only does he transform venues quite literally from drab to fab, but his company also has an ongoing green strategy which means they’re conscious of how they are impacting the environment and that is pretty cool to see from an events company! Keep reading to find out more.
Hi, my name is James and I’m the MD of That Event Company.
We are an events company based in Thame, Oxfordshire and we have traveled nationwide for weddings and corporate events. As part of our ongoing green strategy, we have now reduced the mileage we are willing to travel down to 30 miles. For our reasoning behind this please see our green plan: https://bit.ly/3c39l3q
If you would like more information about how we have achieved carbon neutral accreditation or how we can help you achieve it for your wedding please let us know.
Now we have got the conscientious part of our art explained let’s go on to what we do.
In simple terms, we take your venue or space and help create a bespoke experience for you and your guests. We do this using audio, visual, and lighting equipment.
Lighting can take any ordinary venue and make it unique to your big day. We work on a simple process that goes from cost-effective to larger budgets.
Uplighting: columns of light that go from the floor upwards that create an ambient glow to the space (inside and outside).
Ceiling wash lighting: lights that specifically light up the ceiling to increase the overall ambiance of the space.
Dapple lighting: lights that create texture to walls, ceilings, and floors (these lights can be static or moving) (inside and outside).
Branding: specifically made stencils to have anything projected around a venue (these lights can be static or moving) (inside and outside).
Of course, basic moving lights for the dancefloor don’t go a miss and some clients can even opt to go all out and have a festival-style setup.
Here is a basic setup video which features high powered static multibeam light and some basic uplighting:
The change is pretty impressive!
Here are a few images showing the power of transformation. It may not be to your taste, but all of the colours and shapes are changeable!

With lighting, it’s best to set a budget that’s realistic for yourselves and your venue’s requirements. Be honest with the lighting supplier. We are always willing to help as there is nothing worse than walking away feeling the wedding venue could have looked so much better!
Audio can sometimes be overlooked. It’s not a case of two speakers are enough for any venue. Physics play a big role in getting this right – as does good high-quality equipment.
For a wedding there are generally three times an audio system will be used throughout the day:
For the ceremony, audio quality is key. You do not want it too loud so we recommend a few speakers distributed around. If you want the celebrant mic’d then you will also need a few more speakers to make sure the quality and loudness are there before the mic begins to “feedback” through the audio system- which is a horrible sound!
For the drinks reception and dinner, it’s all about background music and speeches. It’s good to have an adequate level from at least four points meaning the music is nice and even throughout and when the speeches happen no one at the back of the room is struggling to hear.
Audio for your wedding entertainment is normally determined by the act performing; band / DJ, whether the party is in a room or outside and the capacity expected on the dancefloor.
Audio varies in quality so we stock medium range and high quality range.
The jump in the cost for rental is disproportionate to the purchase cost as the higher quality equipment has residual value for the company.
To give you an example…
Medium range:
Purchase price: £1200
Rental price: £40
High quality range:
Purchase price: £18,500
Rental price: £160.00
Bang for the buck! Always choose better quality equipment. There is nothing worse than low quality equipment at a wedding. Your wedding is an exceptionally important day! All of your suppliers are your partners for the day and we want it to be perfect for you.
