There are plenty of blogs out there like “10 Things Not To Say To A Bride!” but there are a few important things I think they are missing. I’m going to break these down into 3 blog posts. And I’m not discounting the groom here! These are 3 things that you really should not say to a bride OR groom.
This can also be, “Wow! You’re young to be getting married!” And, “What’s the rush?” There’s plenty of variations to this statement but we all know they mean one thing. YOU’RE TOO YOUNG.
I got married when I was 21 years old. Yep. Some people thought that was absolutely crazy. I was actually told, “And you’re not living together?! At least live together first! You don’t know what you want yet!” I’ve also been asked this question numerous times, “You’re 21 and you’re getting married? Wow! So… how old is he?” It came as a surprise to many people but the people who really knew us supported us 100% and we were certain that getting married was exactly the right step for us.
Why shouldn’t you say this to a bride or groom?
Well for one, they’ve already said yes! What you’re saying to them is to go back on their promise they made to each other. That’s not a good start! Not only is that unhelpful, but it is hurtful. Secondly, you never know the full story. You are probably judging their relationship based on a bad experience or by what seems acceptable in this day and age.
Joel and I dated for 9 months before getting engaged. We might have waited longer, but because of my visa situation I needed to leave the UK and we both didn’t want to separate without a definite plan for me coming back. We didn’t want to separate without knowing when we would see each other again. We got engaged in May and I left in August and we set our wedding date for July the following year. If our circumstance was different, we might have enjoyed dating for longer but we knew we were eventually going to get married so even though the government fast-tracked (literally, haha!) our relationship, we held on tight, trusted God above all else and enjoyed the ride. This is what people didn’t know when they looked at our baby faces and thought we were too young to get married.
There’s number 1! Stay tuned for number 2.
