Today I got to thinking… there is something really important about setting goals. In every area of life. It could be in dieting, exercise, in the amount of time spent with family, friends, maybe spouses or in the amount of effort given to practicing an instrument or honing a craft. Regardless of your goals, it is vitally important to set them!
Along with setting goals, I believe it is equally important to set boundaries. I believe these two things come hand in hand. If you don’t have a goal, you will never know when you’ve made it to where you want to be. And if you don’t set boundaries, you will never know when you’ve crossed a line.
Sometimes I picture life as a long road with bumps and mountains and unexpected turns. Regardless of how slow or how fast I travel this road, I will eventually go from point A to point B. But where is point B? And how will I know if I stray off the path or make the wrong turn? Goals and boundaries.
When I consider my own goals, a few things come to mind. Commit to yoga every morning and exercise daily to maintain health and manage back pain. Book a certain number of weddings for next year. Be a better wife and friend to my husband.
Boundaries for me might then look like this: Commit to exercising and yoga practice at 7:30am (or else it doesn’t get done…ahem*). Create an atmosphere in my work place for concentration and productivity. Put down my work and social media at 5:00pm every day so when my husband comes home he has a face to see and not the back of a laptop screen. It could be as simple as that! Boundaries are not to constrain us, only to free us and enable us to do what we love in the best way we know how.
So, what are your goals? What boundaries are you setting in place to stay on track?
I never want to stop dreaming big, but if I don’t set boundaries and healthy principles in my life, my dreams will never become a reality.
Let’s dig deep together and never give up, ever.
