How To Get The Perfect Confetti Shot
The traditional confetti throwing moment on a wedding day is one of my favourites to capture. This moment, just after the bride and groom have become husband and wife, is such an exciting moment. What better way to capture the joy and excitement than with a confetti photo! In my experience as a wedding photographer, I have realised there are some pretty big Dos and Don’ts when it comes to confetti throwing (guests, this one’s for you!). Whether friends and family gather around or make two lines for the newlyweds to walk through, these Dos and Don’ts will practically guarantee that perfect confetti shot!
3 Big Don’ts
You might not think people need to be instructed on how to throw confetti. We all know how to throw right? Well here are 3 ways to avoid doing it badly… just in case. ;)
- DON’T pelt the confetti at the bride and groom. This is pretty self-explanatory, but just so we’re all on the same page, this means do not throw the confetti at a downwards angle directly towards the bride and groom’s face.
- DON’T extend your arm into the aisle to get all of your confetti directly on their heads. Doing this blocks the view of the people the bride and groom want to see in their photograph (including you!) and it doesn’t give the pretty fluttering effect that makes the photo great! It looks exactly like it is- confetti being dumped on someone’s head.
- DON’T dump your confetti down the bride’s dress. Believe it or not, I have seen this done more than once. It might be funny at the time, but it is not fun for the bride to fish clumps of confetti out of her dress especially when family or bride and groom photos are due straight after. Trust me on this one. ;)
3 Big Dos!
- DO throw your confetti high in the air! Throw it as high as you can so it has time to fall lightly on the bride and groom while the photographer snaps the moment. This way confetti is not getting directly in their eyes, noses, mouths but falling on their heads and all around them. They can enjoy a kiss or walk through the link with smiling faces, not squinting or ducking! Whether in a cone or in your hand, throw it high! It can be magical.
- DO cheer and shout as loud as you want! In their wedding photos, the bride and groom want to see the joy and excitement their friends and family have for their marriage and this is the perfect moment to express it. Go for it!
- For the bride and groom, DO talk to your photographer beforehand on how you want to do your confetti throwing. Do you want guests to surround you in a semicircle? Do you want guests to make two lines for you to walk through? Do you have a specific location in mind? Have you put someone in charge to organise this part of the day? Any details you give your photographer ahead of time helps them direct guests, know when to cue the confetti and prepare them to capture the confetti moment you desire.
… and most importantly ENJOY! Shower the bride and groom in love and have fun!
